人民的好总理

1.1人民的好总理

周恩来生于江苏淮安。1921年加入中国共产党，是伟大的马克思主义者，伟大的无产阶级革命家、政治家、军事家、外交家，党和国家主要领导人之一，中国人民解放军主要创建人之一，中华人民共和国的开国元勋。他一贯勤奋工作，严于律己，关心群众，被称为“人民的好总理”。

1943年3月18日，周恩来45岁农历生日。南方局的同志们决定“热闹一下”，准备好瓜子、水果和糕点，想给忙碌中的周恩来一个惊喜。可大家一等再等，就是不见周恩来下楼。为了不让请他的同志为难，周恩来说：“你们的心意我领了，请把这些茶点留给加夜班的同志吧！”后来，周恩来只让厨房为他做了一碗普通挂面作为纪念。吃过面条后，他再次开始繁忙的工作，一干又是几个小时。当晚，他写下《我的修养要则》一文，对自己提出了严格要求：加紧学习，努力工作，坚持原则，向群众学习。

1958年1月，周恩来到杭州视察，随身带着自己的枕巾、棉褥子、床单、被子。被子是解放战争时期在梅园新村用的那一床，洗得已经泛白。枕巾用了又用，中间已经破损，周恩来就把破了的地方剪掉、两端重新缝上继续用。浙江省警卫处的同志实在看不下去，就趁他去开会的机会从后勤部门领了一条新枕巾给换上了。周恩来开会回来后发现换了新枕巾，就对浙江省警卫处的同志语重心长地说，我们的国家还不富裕，要保持艰苦奋斗的传统，即使以后富裕了，也不能丢了这个光荣传统。周恩来坦率地说，六七亿人口的中国就一个总理，再穷也不缺那几身新衣服，但问题不是缺不缺衣服，我这样做不光是一个人的事，而且是提倡节俭、不要追求享受，提倡大家保持艰苦奋斗的共产党人本色。

周恩来一生心底无私、天下为公的高尚人格，是中华民族传统美德和中国共产党人优秀品德的集中写照，永远为后世景仰。

1.2 Good Premier of the People

Born in Huai’an, Jiangsu Province, Zhou Enlai joined the Communist Party of China in 1921 and was a great Marxist, proletarian revolutionary, statesman, militarystrategist, diplomat, one of the major leaders of the Party and the State, one of the major founders of the People’s Liberation Army, and a founding father of the People’s Republic of China. He was known as the “Good Premier of the People” because he worked diligently, disciplined himself and cared for the people.

March 18, 1943 was Zhou Enlai’s 45th lunar birthday. The comrades of the Southern Bureau decided to “liven things up” and prepared sunflower seeds, fruits and pastries in order to give him a surprise. They waited and waited, but Zhou Enlai did not come down stairs. In order not to embarrass his comrades, Zhou Enlai said, “I appreciate your kindness. Please leave these refreshments for the comrades who are working overnight.” Later, Zhou Enlai only asked the kitchen to make a bowl of plain noodles for him to celebrate. After the meal, he went back to his work for hours on end. That night, he wrote the article “My Rules for Self-Cultivation,” in which he sets strict requirements on himself: studying intensively, working hard, sticking to principles and learning from the people.

In January 1958, Zhou Enlai went to Hangzhou for inspection, bringing with him his own pillow towel, cotton mattress, bed sheet and quilt. The quilt was the one used in Meiyuan New Village during the War of Liberation. It had been washed many times and turned white. The pillow towel, having been used again and again, was broken in the middle. Zhou Enlai cut off the broken place and sewed it on both ends again. The comrades of Zhejiang Provincial Guard could not bear to watch this, so when Premier Zhou went to a meeting, they replaced the pillow towel with a new one from the logistics department. When Zhou Enlai came back from the meeting and saw the new towel, he said to the comrades sincerely, “Our country is not rich, so we should preserve the tradition of frugality and hard work. Even if we become rich later, we should not abandon this glorious tradition”. He also said bluntly, “China, with a population of 600 to 700 million, has only one premier. No matter how poor the countries is, there is definitely no shortage of new clothes for the premier. But the problem is not about lack of clothes. I am not doing this just on my own. Instead, I am advocating frugality and avoiding hedonism. I believe it is the true nature of a Communist to stick to the principles of frugality and hard work “.

Zhou Enlai’s noble character of being selfless and public-spirited throughout his life is a typical reflection of the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation and the excellent character of the Chinese Communists, and will always be admired by future generations.
