一碗白米粥

陈毅（1901—1972），男，名世俊，字仲弘，四川乐至人，中国共产党员，中华人民共和国十大元帅之一。中国人民解放军创建人和领导人，军事家。

一天晚上，陈毅从军部忙完回家时已是半夜时分。进门见张茜正盛着一碗大米粥说：“等你到小半夜，知道你准饿了，给你熬了一碗大米粥，喝了吧。”陈毅见了，忙走了过去，连连说好。可话一出口就了愣住了，双眉也立了起来:“哪来的大米?”

“大顺从县里领来的。”张茜答道。陈毅有些生气，他转身走到院子，朝西边喊道：“大顺，来一下！”“这大米哪来的?”

“从前庄(独树头村)县里粮库领来的，”大顺实话实说。“这事我没忘，”陈毅更生气了，“我和张县长说过，这些大米要保管好，只留给伤病员吃，别人谁也不许动。为什么还违反纪律?”

“俺没有违反纪律，”大顺闪动着一双大眼睛说，“既然是只给伤病员吃，你也是老病号，你也可以吃嘛，违反什么纪律?”

“乱弹琴，我这痔疮是小毛病，不在照顾之列。”他们的争执声惊动了房东一家。

老房东钟大叔走过来，弄清原委后说：“陈司令，你身体也有毛病，又加了大半夜的班，喝碗大米稀饭也不算什么呀！”

陈毅连连摇头说：“大叔，话不能这么说，现在是战争时期，国民党几十万大军压境，天上有飞机，地上有大炮，前方战士都在浴血奋战，有时连煎饼都啃不上，我在后方却喝大米粥，这就是腐化嘛。”

陈毅耐心地对他们说：“心里没有群众，只想着自己花公家的钱、拿公家的东西去享受，这就是腐化。我职务虽然高，工作也比较忙，身体也不太好，但这都不是搞特殊的理由。相反，正因为我的职务较高，才更应带头执行党的最高宗旨，率先与群众同甘共苦。否则，就不是一个真正的共产党人，不是一个合格的共产党的领导人。”

A Bowlof Rice Porridge

Chen Yi (1901—1972), male, name Shijun, courtesy name Zhonghong, born in Lezhi, Sichuan Province, was a member of the Communist Party of China, and one of the ten Grand Marshals of the People's Republic of China.He was a founder, leader and strategist of the People's Liberation Army of China.

One evening, it was already midnight when Chen Yi came home from his work at the army headquarters. After walking in the door, he saw Zhang Qian holding a bowl of rice porridge and she said, "I’m waiting for you. I know you must be hungry so I have made a bowl of rice porridge for you. Just have it." After Chen Yihaving seenthis,he walked over quickly, keeping saying ok. But he was stunned with his browsraisedup as soon as he said the word, “where did you get the rice?"

"Da Shun got it from the prefecture." Zhang Qian answered. Chen Yi was angry, turned around, and walked to the yard, shouting at the west side “Da Shun”. He asked, “Where did the rice come from?”

"Getting it from the Qianzhuang (Dushutou Village) county's grain depot," Dashun responded truthfully. "I haven't forgotten that matter," Chen Yi said more angrily. "I've told the county chief Zhang that he should take good care of the rice which couldonly beaccessible for the sick and wounded. No one else is allowed to touch it. Why did you break the rules?"

"I didn't break the rules," Dashun blinks and says:" Since it's only provided for patients, you've been suffering from a long-standingdisease. No rule did I break."

"Talking nonsense! My hemorrhoid is an indisposition, which doesn't have to be looked after." The dispute between them disturbed the whole family of landlord.

Mr. Zhong, the old landlord, came over and found out what was going on. "Commander Chen," he said, "It doesn't matter to have a bowl of rice porridge as you've been workingfar into the nightwith a physical problem ."

Chen Yi shook his head and said: “It is during the war time.There are planes in the sky and cannons on the ground. The soldiers in the front are fighting with blood. Sometimestheycan't even eat pancakes, but I eat rice porridge in the rear.This is corruption.”

Chen Yi said to them patiently: “If I’m not the least bit concerned about themasses and all I want is to derive immense pleasure from consuming public property, itis corruption. High position, busy work or poor health, none of themwhichcould be used as a pretext for exercising my prerogatives. On thecontrary, it is precisely because of my senior rank that I should take the lead in learning and adhering to the primary principle of the party and in sharing delights and common hardships with the masses. Otherwise,Icould neither be called a true communist nor a qualified leader of the Communist Party."
